Race, Citizenship and Democracy w/ Dan-el Padilla Peralta

On August 12 at 11:30 a.m. EDT, Law@theMargins Editor Chaumtoli Huq talks with Dan-el Padilla Peralta, an Dominican American scholar on the classics and author of the recently published memoir “Undocumented: A Dominican Boy’s Odyssey from a Homeless Shelter to the Ivy League.”

Dan-el brings an unique theoretical and personal perspective on the practical definition of democracy both in the United States and his birth country of the Dominican Republic. Join us for a discussion on nationality, citizenship and the implications of our shifting conceptions of being American or Dominican.

We will also discuss his recent Op-Ed, Worst of US Immigration Policy Reflected in Dominican Republic.

ABOUT DAN-EL PADILLA

Dan-el headshotSmallerBorn in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Dan-el Padilla Peralta came to the United States with his family at the age of four. When their initial visas lapsed, Dan-el’s father returned home but Dan-el’s mother stayed, determined to make a better life for her bright sons. Dan-el would spend his school career navigating all the corners of the American Dream — from the NYC’s homeless shelter to the rough streets of East Harlem to the ultra-elite halls of one of Manhattan’s top private schools. It was immersed in the world of books where he found his greatest comfort and where his success shot him to the top of his class and eventually to Princeton University. There, he graduated summa cum laude and just weeks before delivering his class’s salutatorian speech, came out as an undocumented American in a Wall Street Journal.
