[dropcap]H[/dropcap]ere are some facts and figures behind our #HerWorkHerRights  campaign and why it is in everyone’s best interests to see to it that women have the most basic rights at work.

 

Did You Know?

  • Globally, women are paid less than men; and often work in vulnerable or low paid jobs, but women in unions close this wage gap.
  • Women of color experience larger pay gaps; single women face a larger wage gap than married women; and mothers experience a “wage penalty” which is in part due to taking leave to take care of a child.
  • Although women are earning the majority of college degrees, this gender wage gap persists, in part because they need to take time off to take care of children.
  • Wage gap impacts children, because their earnings are important to a family’s economic security.
  • Women devote 1 to 3 hours more a day to housework than men; increasing the share of household income controlled by women benefit children.
  • Companies greatly benefit from increasing leadership opportunities for women, which is shown to increase organizational effectiveness. It is estimated that companies with three or more women in senior management functions score higher in all dimensions of organizational effectiveness.
  • Surveys have shown that 1 in 3 women has been sexually harassed at work.
